Window Refresh: Window Treatments That Look Great In Every Home

The US home remodeling industry recorded $339 billion in revenue for 2020. This year is already on trend to surpass this figure. Even certain cities in Florida will see an increase of about 30% in the amount spent on remodeling. You may be a part of this statistic if you’re ready to make some changes to your home. This doesn’t have to be an expensive undertaking. A window refresh may be the thing you need to enhance both the interior and exterior of your home.

When it comes to window treatments, there are many options available. It’s important to know which will work best in your home. Read on to find out more.

Factors That May Affect Your Choice of Window Treatments

Window treatments can do wonders for your home. But, there are a few factors that may affect the type and style of window treatment you choose. These include:

  • Your home’s decor and style
  • Window shapes
  • Level of privacy required
  • How often you need to access your windows
  • The amount of light you want to enter your home
  • Your budget

When choosing, take into account Florida’s year-round sunshine. UV rays entering your home can fade your furniture, paint, and floor.

The window treatment you use will determine how much heat stays in your home when it’s cooler. It will also affect how cool your home is during the summer months.

A Few Great Window Treatment Options

The sky is the limit. Choose any of the following to make your home stand out.

Blinds

Vertical blinds, as their name suggests have vertical slats. There are also blinds with horizontal slats. They both fit within your window frame.

You can open or close them to varying degrees to control the amount of light that comes into your home. They are available in several styles including:

  • Venetian blinds
  • Wood blinds
  • Faux wood blinds
  • Metal blinds

Wood blinds can be oak, bamboo, cherry, basswood, or woven wood. Faux wood blinds are usually made from composite, foam wood, PVC, or vinyl. They look like real wood and come in a variety of colors.

All these come with the option of motorized blinds, corded or cordless blinds. If you have children or pets, it’s best to choose motorized or cordless blinds, as cords can be a safety hazard.

Blinds are inexpensive. The cost of materials and installation can start from $250 to $300 per window.

They are generally easy to maintain. But, you will need to clean them often due to Florida’s heat and occasional Sahara dust.

They facilitate greater privacy as well as light control. But are not as energy-efficient as some other window treatments. The slats of some blinds such as plastic and aluminum also tend to damage easily.

Shades

Shades are similar to blinds as they also fit within your window frame. However, unlike blinds, they are made from fabric. They function by rolling upward to let the light in.

They come in a variety of styles including:

  • Roller shades
  • Honeycomb shades
  • Roman shades
  • Blackout shades
  • Cellular shades

The average price of window shades can range from $140 to $320 per window, depending on the type of shade you choose. Shades are available in more styles, colors, fabrics, patterns, and materials than window blinds. They also offer more privacy, especially if you choose blackout shades.

Cellular and honeycomb shade options are very energy-efficient. They both have pockets that trap air to keep your home cooler in summer and warmer when it’s cool outside.

Unfortunately, they can prove more challenging to clean. They may not be the best option if you or any of your family members have allergies.

You won’t have as much control over the light that enters your home after installing shades. It’s limited because you can only roll them up or down. They also have predetermined opacity levels.

Shutters

Interior shutters have always provided an elegant touch and character to homes. Interior window shutters have louvers, similar to blind slats, built into a frame. The entire frame fits over your window.

You can open the entire frame like a door and they are extremely easy to operate. Window shutters are sturdy and durable and come in a variety of options including:

  • Plantation shutters
  • Wood shutters
  • Faux wood shutters
  • Vinyl shutters
  • Louvered shutters
  • Customized shutters

Painted wood shutters can cost from $55 to $330, while stained wood can cost from $61 to $363. Faux wood is less expensive. Painted faux wood can range from $45 to $270 and stained faux wood shutters can range from $50 to $297.

Faux wood shutters are also moisture and humidity-resistant. They’re great for the Florida climate and you can safely use them in your bathroom. They don’t stain or warp, which isn’t the case with wood shutters.

Window shutters offer great light control and also provide various insulation options. They provide a barrier that keeps the heat, cold, and insects out. They are also easy to maintain and can increase the value of your home.

Unfortunately, because they consist of an all-in-one frame, damaged shutters are not easy to replace.

Other window treatment options include draperies. These are easy to clean and can perfectly match your home’s decor. However, they also attract a lot of dust and dirt which isn’t good for allergy sufferers.
